Initiative

Have you ever heard the old saying, “Some people follow the trends and some people set the trends?”

While we are not discussing fashion, we can apply the same concept to our business.  There are leaders and followers in every field and we are no different in our sales organization.

What exactly is “initiative?”  One way to define it is:  the ability to act on your own.

Taking InitiativeWhen you are truly independent and really your own boss, you will have to have the ability to act and make decisions without the help or advice of other people.   You’ll be the one providing the creativity, ingenuity and resourcefulness; you’ll be the one designing the plan of attack.

The superstars in our business definitely take the initiative to get the job done, whatever it takes, no matter how long it takes, regardless the effort needed.  They don’t wait around for someone else to act and they don’t ask permission to act.  They just do it. They are doers.  They see what needs to be done and they get it done.  They don’t wait around for someone to ask them to do something.

And even though they are their own boss and they set their own schedule, you don’t see them sleeping in.  Even our seven-figure income earners, who could sleep ‘til noon if they wanted to, are early risers, because, as a leader, they have developed the habits of excellence, where they understand nobody else is going to do their work for them.  They say, “if it’s to be, it’s up to me.”

It’s pretty easy for management to see who has initiative and who needs to be told every little thing that needs to be done.  Once you are trained on your job, you need to develop the ability to work “without supervision,” where your inventiveness allows you to set the agenda, take the action steps, achieve the intended results and reap the rewards.

It’s a simple concept but not everyone is cut out to be completely independent.  But for those who can work independently, make decisions, take the initiative to take action, the pot of gold is waiting for them at the end of the rainbow.  At National Agents Alliance we look for people who can stand on their own two feet, and don’t need someone to hold their hand.  Remember, the sales profession is the highest paid profession in the work world, but those without initiative need not apply!
